By GameChanger Media Mishawaka Varsity Cavemen fell to NorthWood Varsity Baseball 3-2 on Wednesday at NorthWood High School on the final play of the game. The game was tied at two in the bottom of the seventh when Landon Johns (1-1) induced Connor Reed to hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored. Both teams were strong on the hill. NorthWood Varsity Baseball pitchers struck out nine, while Mishawaka Varsity Cavemen sat down six. NorthWood Varsity Baseball opened the scoring in the first after Mason Warren grounded out, scoring one run. Mishawaka Varsity Cavemen took the lead in the top of the second inning after Braedyn Smith doubled to center field, and Jayden Pyle singled to center field, each scoring one run. Nate Dutkowski singled down the right field line following a 7-pitch at-bat, which helped NorthWood Varsity Baseball tie the game at two in the bottom of the sixth. Reed earned the win for NorthWood Varsity Baseball. The starting pitcher surrendered six hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out nine and walking none. Johns took the loss for Mishawaka Varsity Cavemen. The hurler went six and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on four hits, striking out six and walking five. Izaiah Bute went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Mishawaka Varsity Cavemen in hits. Smith and Pyle each drove in one run for Mishawaka Varsity Cavemen. Mishawaka Varsity Cavemen turned one double play in the game. Reed and Dutkowski were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in one run for NorthWood Varsity Baseball. Dutkowski went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead NorthWood Varsity Baseball in hits. NorthWood Varsity Baseball were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Ryder Ransberger had the most chances in the field with nine. Next up for Mishawaka Varsity Cavemen (8-4, NLC 4-1) is a game against Northridge Varsity Raiders on Friday at home starting at 5:30.
